Before I start rolling through my fall reviews, I’d like to take a second to recognize my Tivo, which I have loved every since I got it for Christmas (thanks mom) and which I now realize I will have to give up forever (or for at least 2 years when our Direct Tv contract expires)…I told you of last week’s Monday night debacle, well to make matters worse, our dvr cut off in the middle of Grey’s Anatomy!!!!! It is one thing to make me miss ½ of a brand new show, but to make me miss the premiere of a returning favorite? Unacceptable!!! After much discussion (and yelling, screaming & pouting) Jay finally gave his approval for to resurrect my Tivo! But, my friends, my happiness was fleeting as we realized that although I could use my Tivo, I would not be able to record 2 shows at once, ultimately rendering my Tivo useless. Hold on, I need a second. I know for most of you this is a silly little issue, but really, I loved my tivo. Imagine having a friend that was consistent & happy even went out of its way to make things easier & having that friend replaced with a volatile & cold. That’s how I feel. But, alas, it is time to move on, and make my peace with the dvr from hell. I can always hope that Direct Tv will upgrade or that cable will steal the Football package from Direct Tv. Here’s hoping!
Let’s get back to some reviews!
Tuesday
House (Tues, 9PM Fox) I use to watch House. As much as I love Hugh Laurie I think the show is way too formulaic and it gets boring after a while. Fast forward to this year, me with nothing to watch on Tuesdays & House without his staff. That’s something new. So I watched last week’s premiere & I thoroughly enjoyed it. Should be fun to watch House pick a new staff, reality show style. ***
Wednesday
Back to You Second Viewing-As I mentioned earlier all new shows get 2 views and although I though this episode had some amusing moments, I don’t think it is the show for me (I’m super picky about sitcoms). **
Private Practice (9PM ABC)-First off, I’m not sure why Audra McDonald replaced Merrian Dungey. I didn’t like the character any more, actually, I liked her a bit less. To tell you the truth, the only character I really did like was the Pediatrician. Maybe it is because I enjoy seeing him smile, last year he was so cranky & mean on Prison Break. This show better take it up a notch if it wants to make it into my season pass list. I have high expectations because of Greys & this show is not living up to it. On the plus side, I have heard from multiple sources that the show is much better in upcoming episodes.
** ½
Dirty Sexy Money (10PM ABC)-I love it. It is trashy, fun & thrilling. P.S. The cast is to die for too! Peter Krause (NARM!!!), Donald Sutherland, Billy Baldwin, and Samaire Armstrong (Anna, The O.C.). I was cracking up about the ring tones Nick’s secretary assigned to each of the Darling’s. Love it! *** ½ (yeah that’s right, already made the season pass list, even without the second viewing)
The Bionic Woman (9PM NBC)-I wasn’t going to watch this originally because I loved the original and there is no way this show will live up to Lindsay Wagner. But, it got some good reviews & who I am to turn away from a show. I thought it showed a lot of promise. The way I measure a good show is how attached I get to the characters. Do I care about their story? Do I want to invest my time to find out about them? Although Jaime lacked charisma, and paled in comparison to the evil, first bionic woman, I did find myself caring about her; and that might be just because she reminds me of the girl from Wonderfalls. Anyhoo, for now I’m sticking with it. ***
Life (10PM NBC)-Another show I wasn’t going to watch, but those marketers at NBC suckered me in. I found myself completely compelled by the main character, a cop who spent 12 years in prison for a murder he didn’t commit. New evidence released him & he’s back on the force—and also trying to find out who set him up. I think it is an interesting twist on the basic cop show—to show a character that went through something so traumatic, (a cop locked up, losing his family) and how you would make it through that. So far, so good. ***
Thursday
Survivor, Second Watch
As of now, I’m still on board, but that is thanks to Todd, the gay, Mormon flight attendant. If he goes, I may as well, because everybody else Stinks! ***
Grey’s Anatomy (9PM ABC)-As previously mentioned, I highly enjoyed most of the first 29 minutes & then had to watch the remaining 30 mins on ABC.com. Thank God for the internet. I thought it was MOSTLY good. I still hate George & Izzy. They have zero chemistry & totally ruined an awesome platonic relationship. I’m sick of Meredith & Derek. Plus, what man stays with a woman who takes off to Hawaii for 17 days without a word? There is a word for what Derek is and I can’t say it here. In the words of our NJ friends, Naughty by Nature, it is another word for cat or kitten. But yeah, that’s what Derek is. And who wants to date one of those? Be a man for the love of God! ***
Big Shots (10PM ABC)-This show got decimated in the reviews, but I still wanted to check it out for myself because I like the cast. Dylan McDermott, Michael “Vaughn” Vartan & Christopher Titus. It was fun to watch these “big shot men” get taken down a few notches, whether it be with a cheating wife, a crazy mistress, an ultra demanding wife or a transsexual prostitute. Fun times everybody. I’m not saying it is Emmy worthy, but I thought it was pretty fun. Guilty Pleasure!!! And, Rob Thomas (creator of Veronica Mars) has joined the team as has Charisma Carpenter. ** ½
The Office (9PM NBC)-I’m not really going to get into this episode because if you love this show, you love it & if you don’t—you don’t. But I thought the premiere was highly enjoyable. ***
My Name is Earl (8PM NBC) Earl is in prison, which is pretty crazy. Hopefully he won’t be in the slammer for too long, but I thought the premiere episode was pretty strong. ***
Friday
Moonlight (9PM CBS) I pretty much turned into this show for the 7 minutes that Jason Dohring (Logan) was on screen. It was kinda worth it. His character is pretty much vampire Logan, but I enjoyed having his face on the screen. Oh, and surprise! Marshall from Alias is part of the cast too. Other than that, the show still felt like an Angel rip off to me. Vampire detective, drives a black convertible, keeps disappearing in the middle of conversations, in love with a blond. The story was pretty weak (I figured out both plot twists by the second commercial break) and I didn’t really become attached to the leads. Plus, there is no reason for him to like humans, he is not tortured with a soul, so what? Why does he rebel against his vampire ways? A comment I read earlier sums it up best, this is a show that would feel right at home Saturday afternoon on fox. Despite that, I will give the show its second viewing. * ½
Sunday
Desperate Housewives (9PM ABC)-Just like Grey’s, mostly good. Hooray for Nathan Fillion & Bree & Lynette. Boooo to the Edie storyline. Edie use to be a strong, sexual, bitchy woman. And now she’s just a psycho. Don’t like it! ***
Brothers & Sisters (10PM ABC)-I love this show & I’ve missed the Walker clan & all their bickering. I know what happens to Justin, so I wasn’t as emotional as I’m sure some of you were—but I thought the show was great. ****
Up Next:
Journeyman (Monday, 10PM NBC) (I’ve heard from a few people that I should give this show a chance)
Pushing Daisies (Wed, 8PM ABC)
30 Rock (Thurs, 8:30 NBC)
Friday Night Lights (Fri, 9PM, NBC)
Before I depart, just wanted to chime in for Friday Night Lights. I’ve recently netflixed the show and am hooked. Loving it. A lot. I’ve got to get through the last 2 dvd’s so I can watch the premiere. I highly recommend giving this show a shot.
I’ll be back next week with second thoughts and cancellation watch 2007!
