KT Update- My TIVO is Going to Explode!!

Hey kids. Fall season is in full swing and my poor tivo is in overdrive!!! Before I get into some reviews, I’ve got some gossip to spill.

Continuing the tradition of bringing back 80’s-90’s tv stars back from oblivion, Veronica Mars will be graced with Richard Greico for a multi-episode arc. Oohhh, I wonder if he’ll be sporting that leather jacket that I remember from his Jumpstreet days.

In other casting news, Tori Spelling will do a brief stint on Smallville as a gossip columnist at the Daily Planet with some superpowers.

-----We interrupt this update to bring you BREAKING NEWS--- I’ve just received an email from AOL, it is a first listen to JC’s new single, Until Yesterday. JC has decided to take advantage of the JT heat, and has his former bandmate on as producer. I have to say. I really didn’t like it. I feel like JC’s team or whoever is in charge always picks bad singles. There were so many kick ass songs on his last cd that could have been lead singles and he started off with “Some Girls”. I’m afraid that he is just trying to use the Justin connection to get airplay. Truthfully, I’ve only listened to the song once, so it may grow on me, but as of now, I’m not excited. Sometimes different doesn’t mean better. Either way, I am excited that his single is about to drop, now I’ll get to see him again & that means new record & tour! Yay!—Please come to NC!!! We now return you to your regularly scheduled KT Update------

HBO announced that Entourage has been picked up for a 4th season & that unfortunately for Jimmy Norton, Lucky Louie was not picked up. I can’t decide how I feel about this. I feel bad for Lil Jimmy & it was fun to see him on tv each week, plus I thought the show had some outrageously hilarious moments, but, I felt like it took some extra effort on my part to watch the show. If it wasn’t tivo’d I would have missed it every week, usually I sprint to the tv @ 7:59 to watch whatever favorite show tivo has for me.

Finally, it doesn’t fill the hole left in my heart from the cancellation, but Everwood will be replayed on ABC Family. If you never got into this show you should give it a chance. And if you love it, you should tivo all the episodes & then burn them onto dvd’s because only season 1 has been put on dvd.

New TV Reviews

Just in case you forgot, here is my rating scale.
Here’s my rating scale:
* One Tree Hill (I do not endorse this show)
** Smallville (I’ll watch it, but it hasn’t made it to my season pass list)
** ½ Prison Break (I hate this show but I can’t stop watching!)
*** Desperate Housewives (One of my tivo shows)
**** 24 (Nothing will keep me from watching this show!!)

New Shows

Studio 60 On the Sunset Strip (NBC, Mon 10)
This is the most hyped show of the new fall season. If you know anything about television, you’ve heard of Aaron Sorkin or one of his shows (Sports Night, The West Wing). Anyhoo, as I mentioned last week, I like Sorkin’s writing because he is the master of fast paced, quick-witted dialogue; he also tells really good stories. I was pretty impressed with Studio 60, I like the dynamic between Matthew Perry & Bradley Whitford (plus it appears Sorkin has given the the two main characters many of his personality traits). I also enjoyed the "inside joke" in the beginning when every newscaster was reporting the same exact story the same exact way. I hope the show won’t get tiring too fast, he did a good job keeping The West Wing interesting for a few years, but America may not care about’s Sorkin’s opinions on the state of television. I’ll continue to watch in the meantime. ***

Brothers & Sisters (ABC, Sun 10)- A pretty impressive roster—Sally Field, Calista Flockhart, Rachel Griffiths, Balthazaar Getty, Patricia Wettig, Ron Rifkin, Tom Skerritt and the infamous Side Mouth Talker from Reunion. Here’s a surprise, this show centers around a family of 5 siblings and their mother. I thought the acting was stellar, the premiere was a little obvious but, the point of a premiere is to set up the series, so although I knew what was going to happen, it had to happen to push forward the show. I liked this show enough to add it right to my season pass list. ***

The Class(CBS, Mon 8:30)-This show is about a guy who gets his 3rd grade class back for a reunion to commemorate the day he met his girlfriend. Trouble is, she thinks he is a freak for getting all these people together & that he is smothering her. So of course she dumps him. Now all these people who haven’t seen each other in 20 years are buddies! Of course! I thought the show was pretty decent but I didn’t have any desire to watch it this week. **

Six Degrees (ABC, Thurs 10)
As I mentioned last week, most of us would recognize the faces on this show, especially Bridget Moynahan, Erica Christenson & Jay Hernadez. The premise of this show is that everyone is connected by 6 people. So you see characters & storylines intersect, sometimes the characters won’t know each other & sometimes they will impact the other characters. I think it is an interesting premise, I just don’t know how long they can keep it up. I thought it was pretty good. I had a hard time believing some of the storylines though. I’ll give it one more shot, but I’m guessing this one won’t make it to the season pass list. **

Men In Trees I still like this show, it is not high drama or comedy, it is cute. And it made it to my season pass list!!!

Returning Shows

The Amazing Race-Holy crazy ass casting Batman! What a wild bunch! A Kentucky coal miner, two single mothers, two recovering addict models ( I love how the show introduces contestants, it really said “recovering addict models” I nearly piddled I laughed so hard)….a pair of unfabulous gay boys, 2 islamic friends (who kept praying, and ended up getting eliminated BEFORE the pit stop—go figure) This year’s bunch is anything but boring. I’ve already dubbed the addict/model boys as my favorites and so far, in my 3 seasons of watching the show my favorite has either won or come in second. So go addict/models!!

The Office—Best Line Ever. “See Kids, sometimes it pays to be gay.” Holy crap, that was the most uncomfortable, hilarious half hour of my life. Watching Michael trying to deal with a gay employee was priceless. OMG, the gaydar? I think I chocked on my ice cream pop for that one. And that kiss? Holy crap. I love the creators of the Office. NBC promoted the Pam/Jim kiss all summer and the storyline took a backseat to the outing of Oscar, the climax of the show—Michael kissing Oscar to prove he was ok with Oscar being gay was frikkin hysterical (and then when Dwight tried to join in). Wow. I can’t believe I ever doubted this show, and I have to say I’m a little sad that I already deleted this episode from my tivo because I kinda wanna go watch it again.

My Name Is Earl—I still enjoy this show, but now that I’m watching the Office this show suffers a little by comparison (especially since they are on back to back).

Prison Break- I want to take this opportunity to say that even though I still find this show completely ludicrous, I’ve been enjoying it more & more. I think I even made it through last week without groaning. I like the individual storylines, but it was fun to see the boys all back together, especially the scene when Michael & Lincoln came upon T-Bag. Oh yeah, I did groan once, what the Frikk Lincoln! You didn’t completely search T-Bag for the map! Amature! I do like the creepy, pill poppin FBI man more & more—he’s so grumpy. And I’m loving the secret service man cozing up to Sara, he’s so much more fun this year! “We can watch Fried Green Tomatoes!”

How I met your mother- What can I say other than I love Barney? When he was going through all the ways to kill himself at Robin & Ted’s PDA? Classic.

Desperate Housewives- I thought the premiere of Season 3 was a step in the right direction. I liked the storylines for Susan & Gabby especially. I have a hard time believing that after everything Bree has been through she would stay with Orson after the bombshell dropped at her engagement party; and I think the Lynnette-Tom-Other Woman storyline is going to get old FAST. But I’m interested again, and that’s always a good thing.

Grey’s Anatomy-Mozz—if you are reading this, I’m ready to give into peer pressure and watch season 1 if you want to let me borrow it. I tivo’d the first ep of season 3 & as long as there is room on my tivo, I’ll keep it.

Survivor Rant: I’m not going to make this long because although I watch Survivor, I do not consider myself a survivor “fan” because they are in a class all their own, but I would like to put my two cents in and seeing as this is my blog….I’m gonna!
The casting this year is SHADY. I was thinking it and then Cindy forwarded me an email from one of her co-workers. Sundra is an actress, in fact, she’s been on Sex & the City. Fans should remember her as the disapproving, chef sister of the hottie black man that Samantha was dating. For me, this cheapens the show. Survivor fans are rabid, and they try repeadily to get on the show Part of the allure of the show is that YOU could be one of these people. YOU have as much of a chance of being on this show as anyone else. But that is not the way things are now. I think I read that 80% of the contestants were recruited. So that means that only 20% were from people who applied to be on the show? Ehhh. I don’t know. It makes me feel all dirty inside, if this continues, I don’t know how much longer I’ll watch the show. I already watch 20 ACTORS pretend to be castaways, it is called Lost.

I have the following shows tivo’d and will report back to you by the end of the week on them!! Kidnapped (NBC, Wed, 10PM); Jericho (CBS, Wed 8PM); Smith (CBS, Tues 10PM); Heroes (NBC, Mon 9PM).

Also premiering this week:
Ugly Betty (ABC, Thurs 8PM)

KT Update-Too...Much...Music!!!

I’ve been in a music draught for a while. Here & there I’ll hear a song that I like but I haven’t been to Best Buy on the day a record dropped in a long time---Can I even remember? I think last year when the new Fiona Apple came out. But to quote my good friend Hylda, “It is always Feast or Famine”. And so, the new music feast has begun. First Christina, 2 weeks later Audioslave & a week after than Justin. I have more new music than I know what to do with. I don’t believe in reviewing music unless I’ve had a few run throughs to let the music sink into my head to see what stands out & what I hate. But, I’ve been enjoying both JT & Audioslave. I’ve only listened to Christina once, and not all the way through; so I’ll have to give that a few more listens before I comment.

Time for some celebrity gossip!
Well, now that Britney has popped out her second child in less than a year we can all start hoping that she has learned her lesson and will finally invest in some birth control. I sometimes wonder if this pregnancy (which was a surprise) stung a bit to Britney. I mean, she should be out, promoting a new album, but instead she gets to sit home with her white trash husband & watch her ex-boyfriend and her ex-arch nemesis releasing albums & touring. That’s got to hurt, just a tad. And again I say, hopefully the girl will not go near her husband unless she has about 4 different types of contraception handy.

Also, from the celebrity break up center---This just in---Whitney has filed for divorce from Bobby! I’m not really upset about this one, but I am a wee bit surprised. I mean, a few years back this wouldn’t be a surprise but Bobby & Whitney have been through a lot together & seeing their reality show, I actually could understand them together. Let’s all talk a moment of silence for Bobby & Whitney.

In other news, I’ve got some tv reviews!

Men In Trees (Fridays, ABC) This premiered on Tuesday. TV execs think they are getting so smart. Nobody watches tv on Friday. So let’s premiere a show on Tuesday, get a bit of a fan base and then *BAM* surprise, this show is really on Friday nights. I really don’t care what night a show is on, my tivo doesn’t discriminate. Anyhoo, in a nutshell, Anne Heche is a relationship guru who is about to get married when *surprise* she finds out that her fiancée is cheating on her. Being the trooper that she is, she still goes on her book tour, which includes a stop to Alaska. She gets there, all the obligatory comical nature scenes occur (including a wacky raccoon) and after trying for a few days to get out of Alaska unsuccessfully, she decides that this place is where she needs to be. She knows women, but she don’t know crap about men. She needs to stay her & grow, get over what happened to her (actually she takes it quite well, she just gets drunk in a local bar before a lecture…if my wedding got called off a week before it was scheduled to happen because my fiancée was cheating on me with a friend, it would not be so pretty); and learn about men (because as we all know men outnumber women in Alaska about 5-1, or some crap like that. But yeah, besides this overdone concept, I did enjoy this show; I do like Anne Heche & I will tivo the show this Friday. In fact, if I like it, the show will most likely make it to my SEASON PASS LIST! If you wanna check it out ABC is reairing the pilot tonight, followed by the second episode.

Survivor-So yeah. I still don’t get what everyone is flipping out about. I kinda wish I knew someone who was offended by the splitting of the tribes along racial lines so that I could understand it better, because really I don’t see what all the hoopla is about. So far, the lesson we’ve learned is that most stereotypes are true. The Asians kicked ass in the puzzle portion of the challenge & engineered a kick ass camp, the black people had trouble in the water, and the white people were lazy, laid around cuddling and didn’t make a shelter. My favorite person on the show is the wacky Vietnamese guy who guys around rubbing headaches out of people & cracking offense asian jokes. He’s soooo the first to go on that tribe. But he is very entertaining, and a lot more laid back than the rest of his team. On a separate note, I’m beginning to think that Mark Burnett goes out of his way to cast people who have never seen the show. Ok, so the big man on your tribe is annoying & the boys got all masculine and made a decision without the women, but you still don’t vote off a strong member first. How are you going to win challenges? Ugh. So silly.

24 Scoop! The following is a release from Fox. It is pretty spoilerish in terms of how things will start off for season 6; though there is no mention of where Jack is & what condition he is in.

"Season Five concluded with a battered and bloodied Bauer captured by Chinese government agents and headed for points unknown. Season Six picks up 20 months later. Wayne Palmer (DB Woodside), the strong-minded brother of the late President David Palmer, is now himself the President of the United States, while his sister, Sandra Palmer (Regina King), is a determined and powerful advocacy lawyer. After a series of horrific terrorist attacks, Palmer and his team of advisors, Karen Hayes (Jayne Atkinson) and Thomas Lennox (Peter MacNicol) — as well as CTU colleagues Chloe O'Brian (Mary Lynn Rajskub), Curtis Manning (Roger Cross) and Bill Buchanan (James Morrison) — begin an unthinkable, nail-biting day." The spoilerific release also announced that James Cromwell has joined the cast as Jack's estranged father, and Eddie Izzard will play a "villainous accomplice."

Upcoming TV Premieres:

Sunday, Sept. 17
The Amazing Race (8, CBS)– I started watching this show a few years back when Romber were on. Now we watch it every year, although last year, Jay came dangerously close to killing me. During the first 5 episodes contestants went to Italy-Greece & Russian. So for an hour every Tuesday (now the show has moved to Sundays) I would whine: “Jay, I want to go to Greece.” “Jay, I want to go to Italy.” “Jay, I want to ……” You get the point. Anyway, he was so excited when the teams got sent to some far off Middle Eastern country because I was quiet for the whole hour. J

Monday, Sept 18
How I Met Your Mother (8, CBS)-When we last left our friends, Lilly had just broken up with Marshall, Robin & Ted were finally getting somewhere & Barney was…where was Barney? I’m guessing picking up some babes. Anyhoo, this year brings a whole new dynamic. Lilly off finding herself, Marshall heartbroken, Barney trying to cheer Marshall up and make him into his new wingman & Robin/Ted working as a couple. Should be fun.

The Class (8:30 CBS)-I’ve heard mixed reviews on this but I’m going to check it out anyway. It is about a guy who gets his 3rd grade class back for a reunion. No idea why, no idea if it will be good. I’ll let you know

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (10PM, NBC)- This is the standout of the season (or so say the critics) I guess we will see. But really, how can you not root for a bunch of tv veterans & Aaron Sorkin? I’ll always check out Sorkin projects because I loved The American President, love the early days of the West Wing. Plus everyone loves Sports Night, I really got to watch that on dvd.

Tuesday, September 19
Smith (CBS, 10PM) Oh look Ray Liota & Virigina Madsen are a happy family! Fooled You! Really Ray Liota is a high class thief. His plan is to do just a few more jobs so that he can relax with his family, but will the FBI catch him before he quits his life of crime? Sounds kinda like The Sopranos but instead of mob guys you have high class thieves. Eh, I like Virginia Madsen, so I’ll check it out.

Wednesday, September 20
Jericho (CBS, 8) Skeet Ulrich & a bunch of other people have to deal with the after affects of a nuclear explosion. I’m not too clear if a bomb goes off accidentally or what, but apparently these people are far enough away that they don’t get obliterated, yet they will deal with its aftermath.

Thursday, September 21
Six Degrees (ABC, 10PM) Some of you (the movie dorks, like me) will most likely recognize a few of these names. Jay Hernadez, Bridget Moynahan, Erika Christensen, Campbell Scott. They have a few movies between them, and now they are the cast for Six Degrees. A show that illustrates how someone you don’t know can have an affect on your life. Plus, JJ Abrams is executive producer, and ya know, I feel kinda guilty that my Tom Cruise hate outweighed my JJ love this summer, and I didn’t see MI:3. So I’ll definitely check it out.

The Office & My name is Earl (NBC, 8PM, 8:30PM) return on the 21st as well. All the office fans are waiting to see what is going to happen between Pam & Jim. I’ve heard rumblings that the result is “very realistic”. Which to me, means that although they kissed, Pam won’t break up with her fiancée; & she & Jim will no longer speak at work, instead drowning in the tension.

Oh yeah. And for all you Grey’s Anatomy fans, that returns too.

That’s your look ahead for next week. If you watched something that you love/hate let me know!

KT Update-Fall is here!

You know things are bad when I don’t even want to report on the emmy’s. They were ok. The best part of the show was Conan’s intro. He “dropped in” on a few of the top shows. Going from Lost-The Office-24-House, even South Park. It was definitely the best part of the evening. As for the awards themselves, I’m happy for 24 & Keifer, it is about time they got some love. I also can’t really hate on The Office, although I think emmy voters could have waited a year and given the award this year to either Scrubs or Arrested Development. Other than that…blech. I don’t care. I don’t even care to comment on the fashion! Emmy’s do you hear me?? Make the show better before I lose all interest!!!! Like the VMA’s.

Wow, I’m so dangerously close to never watching that EVER again. I think it is highly amusing that a channel that shows videos for about an hour a day can muster up the nerve to have an award show for videos. I mean, I can’t even really have an opinion anymore because I only see the videos I seek out. I’ve seen Justin’s & Christina’s and, oh I saw that Dance, Dance video (that was cool, that danced to Thriller) and uh……uh…..the Madonna video! Yeah, yeah where she is wearing the unitard and leggings. Ok, so that’s 4 videos and one of them is too new to be a nominee. So I tivo’d the show (KT side note, I love my tivo for a variety of reasons, but the best may be its function during an awards show. I start watching 2 ½ hours into the show and finish up in about a half hour. I can zoom past commercials, stoopid presenters & awards. It is awesome! Although because the VMA’s went over I did miss Axl & the Killers—which I saw last night, I didn’t really miss anything great, oh and ya know what, I still don’t know who won video of the year.) But back to the show. Wow. LAME. Justin & Timbaland were pretty good, Beyonce channeled Janet Jackson, there was a lot of rap that I fast forwarded through, there were some guys on a treadmill. Kelly Clarkson & Pink won awards. Britney & K.Fed did a horrendous skit that I fast forwarded half way through…and let’s not forget Jack Black. TERRIBLE!! TERRIBLE!! Sometimes I worry that I am old and out of touch, but then I’ll see a good performance (none on Thursday though) and just realize that MTV sucks now a days. They stink and I don’t like them!

Let’s move on to something a little more pleasant, the new fall season. I’ve decided to take one for the team and really try to watch every new show this year so that I can tell you with full confidence which shows stink and which shows you should watch. Plus my tivo has the nifty feature where it will automatically tape every pilot for me! Yay! I *super heart* TIVO!!! By now, you should all trust me and my taste. I’ve gotten the Veronica Mars club to include 5 new members this year (all by watching my dvds) and there is still time until the Oct. premiere, so if you want to borrow them let me know!!! Oh, and a special shout out to Marianne, who never watches tv (she runs triathlons for the love of god) but watched the entire season of Veronica Mars in a weekend. That’s what I like to see Mare!!! TV=Good!

Every week I’ll review the shows that I’ve watched & give you a little preview of what lies ahead the next week; so get ready kids of fall premiere time!!!!

Shows that have already premiered:

Vanished (Mondays, 9 Fox) Unfortunately this premiered before I made my decision to watch all the new shows. But I haven’t heard anything too great so I don’t feel bad that I missed it.

Justice (Wednesdays, 9 Fox) I hate lawyer shows. I use to watch The Practice but I got annoyed with all the whiny lawyers. So needless to say I wasn’t too excited to watch this, but it has Jack Bristow & Jack from the Creek so I had to give it a chance. It is pretty crazy to see Kerr Smith all grown up from his creek days, he still has that little sensitive face, but he’s a lawyer now!!! And Victor Garber has gone from stoic Jack Bristow to swarmy, smart lawyer!!! Garber is the best part of the show, and I have to say I mostly enjoyed it. You get to see all the pieces of the trial and at the end of the hour they show you what really happened, if the person they were defending did the crime. I’ll probably give it a few more episodes before I ultimately decide. It would be good filler for when there are Lost repeats on. **

Stand Off (Tuesdays, 9 Fox) I like Ron Livingston. I don’t really like his show. Standoff is about a negotiator and his partner (who are sleeping together). So it is an action-romance. Yelch. Didn’t buy the chemistry between the two leads. And I’ so bored with the whole, negotiators are trying to save lives while the tactical team only wants to go in there and shoot up the place. Although I do agree with jimmy, the show did have one outstanding moment of dialogue. Some spoiled kid with mommy issues has a bomb strapped to his chest. Ya know how usually the family gets on the horn to say something comforting? Well, said mommy writes a note that the negotiator reads verbatim. “I’m sorry, I never wanted children.” Yikes! That’s rough. Poor kid, no wonder he had to strap a bomb to his chest to get some attention. **

As you may have noticed, I included one half star rating 2 ½ for “I hate this show yet I can’t stop watching it”. I really, really hate Prison Break and I keep telling myself that if Jay didn’t like it, I wouldn’t be watching. I don’t know if this is true. I just can’t help myself. The show is so frikkin ridiculous. The fact that 8 convicts could out run a line of police cars to even start season 2 is asinine. Then T-Bag gets a vet to re-attach his hand that was chopped off hours earlier? And he stays conscious during the procedure without meds? And has enough strength to kill the vet? And can immediately regain control of his hand? And what about the idiots who are going to see their families? They would have cops staking them out & taps on all the phones. Are you telling me that only ex-prison guard Bellick thought to trail Scoffield’s wife? WTF!!! And, Lincoln is just strolling around town without any kind of disguise, no hat, no nothing? Oh and I know we just escaped prison but hey let’s go to the courthouse and pick up my son. And tweener could not be a more obvious escapee. You know that scene in Stand By Me when Vern is on patrol and has the gone and every time something moves he points the gun? That’s how my man Tweener is. So you see, I could fill 15 pages of these ridiculous plot points yet I need to keep watching so I can keep on being floored with how outrageous this show can get. Plus I have to give them points for shooting Veronica in the forehead in the premiere. That was cool.

Tonight Fox premieres Til Death & Happy Hour. Til Death stars the brother from Everybody Loves Raymond and the only thing I know about Happy Hour is that it is expected to be the first casualty of the season. So I’ll try real hard to watch them so I can report back, but I may have to make an amendment to my rule of watching all the new shows and just make it all the new dramas & some select comedies. (KT Update Note: Today is friday. I couldn't watch them. I tried. I did. But the Mets & Football were on so my fiancee had control of the tv...and I didn't really want to watch them either)

What’s up for next week

Not too many new premieres, the week of the 18th is the big premiere week.

The Simpsons, American Dad, Family Guy, The War at Home (Sept 10)

Men in Trees (debuting Sept 12) ABC
Anne Heche is in Alaska ( I think) looking for a man. I’m going to Tivo this. I’m interested, but I’ve always been an Anne Heche fan. Hey, when you know and love someone from back in their Soap days (Another World) it is had to turn your back on them. Plus she was good on Everwood. I’m not saying it is gonna be good, I’m just saying I’ll check it out.

Survivor (Sept 14)
Wow, everyone is getting their panties in a bunch about this grouping along racial lines. Hate to break it to all the non survivor fans, but this is not new for the show. They’ve split the tribes by sex and age, so naturally race is next. Survivor has always been a social experiment, to see what bonds last when $1 million is on the line. I don’t think the race card is going to be as controversial as everyone expects.

Talk to you next week!
