KT update!-Cancellation Watch 2007!

Welcome to Cancellation Watch 2007. Next week marks the 3rd episode for must shows & as we’ve seen more and more the time when networks start to make cutting decisions. This year I haven’t heard too much talk of ratings by critics or scoop givers so I’m not too sure who is in trouble. Although honestly, there is probably only one new show on the air (which I am now officially jinxing) that I would sincerely miss, even after just one showing and that is Pushing Daisies. I’ll go into more detail in the review, but suffice to say I really, really liked it. So after being burned the last few years, how do I decide what shows to keep watching? Luckily, as previously mentioned, although I do have shows that I am liking, none of them have big question that needs to be answered. I mean, yes, on Life we want to know why he was framed, and on Dirty, Sexy, Money who killed Nate’s dad? (sorry, I’m still referring to him as Nate cause I don’t remember his name on this show)…but it is not like Reunion, where I HAD to know who really killed Sam (on the plus side, I’m thinking it was good that the show got pulled because if I had invested 23 hours of my life to that show & it wasn’t one of the main characters I would have been PISSED!!!!) or The Nine, wanting to know exactly WHAT happened in the bank robbery or Kidnapped-who took Leo? So I’m feeling pretty good right now, no super pressing questions so I’m not so tense about watching shows that may be endangered.

So, who is Endangered? I’ve got some ratings info that may shine a light on that subject. As we all know Neilson provides the weekly ratings. Well our friends at the Futoncritic.com put together a list of the percentage of the audience shows have lost from week 1 to week 2. Usually when a show gets pulled fast, it is because the audience is leaving faster than frat boys at a party without alcohol. From week 1 to week 2 the show with the biggest % loss was K-ville (31%) the show with the least % loss was Moonlight (6%. Now, there are a few things to consider here. K-ville premiered vs. reruns, so of course its audience is going to drop off. It competes against Heroes & the second half of ABC monster, Dancing with the Stars; meanwhile I’m sure most of the audience that tuned in for the Moonlight premiere returned because it is a FRIDAY and it doesn’t have much competition (although this week it tied with FNL for 1st on Friday).

I would say the shows that are in the most imminent danger are K-ville, Life, Bionic Woman and Big Shots, all of which lost at least 20% from episode 1 to episode 2 (gossip girl is also on this list, but being that it is on the CW it has different criteria to live up to, in fact, this show has already been given a full season order). Just to give you a comparison, last year, the shows that lost at least 20% from ep1 to ep 2 were: Six degrees, Kidnapped, The Class, Standoff, The Nine & Daybreak. So, yeah, none of those shows made it to season 2; come to think of it I don’t think any made it to mid season. On the plus side for K-ville though, this Monday it increased 5% in the all important 18-49 demographic. Maybe those Friday night repeats are helping it out.

As far as my own personal season pass list, I have divided the new shows into 3 categories. Season pass, On the Bubble, Not looking good.

Season Pass
Chuck- I continue to enjoy this show & all the characters in it. It is light-hearted spy fun. Oh and CASTING SCOOP, The O.C.’s Rachel Bilson (Summer) will join the show as a possible new love interest for Chuck.

Dirty Sexy Money-I have to watch episode 2, but I can’t imagine not enjoying the guilty fun this show provides.

Pushing Daisies-I was a little wary of this show since it was the “most buzzed about show of 2007”. But, I thoroughly enjoyed the Burton-esque premise & look forward to the new episode. After realizing I would like it I became concerned with the show’s lifespan since most of the quirky shows I like are gone after 4 episodes. But, the premiere did very well. Here’s hoping it doesn’t lose too much of its audience this week.

Life-I’m not really a “cop show” kinda girl, so I’ll give all the credit to lead actor Damian Lewis for keeping me tuned in.

On the Bubble
Journeyman-This show is dangerously close to being on the season pass list. I just need to watch one more episode. At first I wasn’t going to watch it because I thought it was a Quantum Leap rip-off, but after a few reviews from the KT update audience, I decided to check it out. There are some differences between this guy & Scott Bakula. First off, this guy is still in his life, he just gets these pounding headaches & poof he’s sucked back into sometime else. Then he’ll bop back & forth from his life to the different spots (years) along the story he’s supposed to impact. And for some reason, his dead fiancé is his liaison with the past. I’m not too sure what that is all about, but I guess we’ll find out as the year progresses.

Private Practice-I’m still not into this show. Plus, it is not a good sign when the lead actress is annoying the hell out of me.

The Bionic Woman-Torn on this way. I really WANT to like it. I think I want to like it more than I do.

Big Shots-Guilty pleasure or just plain bad? Need a few more episodes to figure it out. Plus, in a few weeks we should start to feel Rob Thomas’ (creator of Veronica Mars) impact.

K-ville-I was interested in the premise of the show & really like the two main stars but truthfully I haven’t watched it since the premiere. We lost 1 ep because of the dvr & then it was all mixed up with Friday & Monday. We have a show taped now & we’ll give

Not looking Good
Moonlight-I’m giving the show one more shot but I don’t even think Logan Echolls can keep me tuning into this one.

Next week: Men in Trees (Friday, 10 ABC)
Samantha Who? (Monday, 9:30 ABC)
