Day 1 & 2 from the upfronts

Hey guys, I was going to wait until the end of the week to send this out, but then I realized it would be ginormous! So, here’s the plan. Today I’m going to send out descriptions of the new shows that NBC & ABC has planned for next year (of course with my comments included). I’ll also send out some tidbits of shows that are on the fence. And then, at the end of the week, I’ll send out the excel sheet outlining next fall’s schedule.

Before we begin, I just want to give a big thumbs down (overall) to the Prison Break finale. I thought it was pretty cool that doctor sara killed herself (probably) and that the VP killed the pres, but that last scene, bah. Are we really supposed to believe that the 5 inmates can outrun the 25 cop cars surrounding them? Boo Bah Hiss. Season 2-on the run, I get it. But give me a sliver of realism. I know how to suspend my disbelief to go with a show ( I do it every week for 24) but you can’t abuse it, you can’t make it so horribly absurd that I can’t take it anymore; especially if I’m going to watch 22 episodes of guys running through the forest. I thought they’d at least make it to the plane (as in, ON the plane) I can’t believe I missed the finale of “How I met Your Mother” for this!!! Thank God for Tivo!!!

Oh! And Scrubs was picked up for next year (as was What About Brian) but Scrubs will most likely be midseason again. Sadly, TV guide is reporting that Everwood will not get picked up by the CW (booooo) and that Veronica Mars will receive a 13 episode order! Only 13! Bah! I am not liking this new CW!!! Updated news! Apparently the CW is a bunch of crackheads because One Tree Hill is rumored to be picked up for next year!!!

Now! The new shows for NBC & ABC!!!! (If I'm at all interested, the show will be in bold)

NBC’s New Fall Lineup

"Friday Night Lights" (Tuesdays, 8-9 p.m) Remember that movie that Tim McGraw & Billy Bob Thorton were in? Ya know, how much Texans really, really, really love small town football (a lot)…hey didn’t MTV make a movie like that with the Dawson? Anyhoo, this is a tv version.

"Heroes" (Mondays, 9-10 p.m.), A group of people discover that they have extraordinary powers, ranging from the ability to fly to hearing other people's thoughts. Greg Grunberg (yay! I love him! If you don’t know him from Alias, you know him from Felicity or as the pilot on Lost!) Ali Larter (hey, this is the girl from the aforementioned Dawson football movie. She put all the whipped cream on her privates!!!) Milo Ventimiglia ("Gilmore Girls"), and Leonard Roberts (he was Riley’s best buddy that got demonized by Adam on Buffy)

"20 Good Years" Wednesdays, (9-9:30 p.m.) John Lithgow & Papa Bluth (wahhhh I miss Arrested Development) star as mismatched buddies who realize that life doesn't last forever.

"30 Rock" (Wednesdays, 9:30-10 p.m.) NBC signed on two shows this year that offer a behind the scenes glimpse of an SNL type show. This is Tina Fey’s show, and it stars
Alec Baldwin, Tracy Morgan, and Rachel Dratch (the funny looking girl from SNL).

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (Thursdays, 9-10pm) So this is the 2nd behind the scenes of an SNL-type show, show. This one is created by Aaron Sorkin and Thomas Schlamme ( collectively behind Sports Night, The West Wing—when it was good--, Jack & Bobby) stars Matthew Perry, Bradley Whitford (The West Wing, Billy Madison –he was Billy’s arch nemesis), Amanda Peet (Saving Silverman) Steven Weber (Wings), D.L. Hughley (The Hughleys,) and Evan Handler (who you may know as Charlotte’s hubby on SATC or Hurley’s invisible friend on Lost).

KT sidenote: I’ll probably check out both of these because I really like both the casts & the people behind both shows. Hello? Alec Baldwin?? I frikkin love him. And he is at his best on SNL so one would think that he would shine in a vehicle like this!!!

Coming Midseason from NBC:
Andy Richter in a private eye comedy. LOVE HIM
The Black Connelly’s –a look into an Irish family’s life of organized crime from Paul Haggis (the guy who wrote & directed CRASH)
Raines with Jeff Goldblum as a detective who communicates with the dead people in his cases (blecch)
Kidnapped-about a rich teenager who gets, uh, kidnapped. This has a pretty interest cast. Jeremy Sisto ("Six Feet Under"), Delroy Lindo ("Crooklyn"), Timothy Hutton (French Kiss, TURK-182) and Dana Delany (China Beach)

ABC New Shows

Betty the Ugly (Friday, 8-9) Based on a telenovela, it is one of those shows about an ordinary girl trying to fit in. Stars: America Ferrera (“Sisterhood of the traveling pants) and Vanessa Williams.

Big Day (Thursday, 8-8:30) "24" meets "Father of the Bride," each episode takes place on a single day from a different point-of-view. Stars: Marla Sokoloff (Whatever it takes) and Wendie Malick ("Just Shoot Me")

Brothers & Sisters (Sunday, 10-11) Family secrets and lies are exposed are exposed when siblings come together to celebrate a birthday and soapy repercussions follow. Oooohhhh! Sounds lame, check out the cast though: Calista Flockhart, Ron Rivkin (Sloane!) Balthazar Getty (oohhhh I’m so giddy! I was just thinking to myself that I’m sad Alias is going to end, because I’ve gotten use to seeing Balthazar every week!) Rachel Griffiths (Brenda, yay!!!) Dave Annable (the guy that kept talking from the side of his mouth on Reunion), Patricia Wettig (the VP from Prison Break) and one of the producers is Marti Noxon, who worked on Buffy!

Do you even need to ask me if I’m going to watch? Hopefully it won’t suck, because I can’t take a tease like that. Too many fun people in that show!

Help Me Help You (Tuesdays, 9:30-10)
A therapy group is led by a doctor (Ted Danson) who may be in the greatest need of therapy. Also stars Jane Kaczmarek ("Malcolm in the Middle").

Let's Rob ... (Tuesdays, 9-9:30)
This sounds like a pretty interesting concept. A group of misfits plot to rob Mick Jagger's luxury Central Park West apartment. Stars: Donal Logue ("Grounded for Life")

Men in Trees (Fridays, 9-10)
Premise: After her wedding plans fall apart, a female relationship coach (Anne Heche) stays in Alaska and looks for love.

The Nine (Wednesdays, 10-11)
Nine people deal with the aftereffects of being held hostage during a bank robbery. Another big cast. Chi McBride ("Boston Public," "House"), Scott Wolf ("Everwood", “Party of Five”), Kim Raver ("24"), Tim Daly (“eyes”, "Wings")

Notes from the Underbelly (Thursdays, 8:30-9)
An expecting couple sees how preparations to have a baby change their own relationship and their relationship with their friends.

Six Degrees (Thursdays, 10-11)
The lives of several New Yorkers intersect, even though they don't know each other.
Another interesting cast!! Jay Hernandez (crazy/beautiful), Bridget Moynahan ("I, Robot", Big’s wife on SATC), Campbell Scott (singles), Erika Christensen ("Traffic")
And it is a J.J. Abrams show!

Midseason from ABC:

Day Break
A cop tries to prevent one murder while clearing himself of another killing for which he's been framed. Taye Diggs, Adam Baldwin ("Firefly")

In Case of Emergency
Premise: Four friends from high school are reunited and discover that their lives hadn't turned out exactly as planned. Jonathan Silverman ("The Single Guy"), David Arquette ("Scream"), Greg Germann ("Ally McBeal"), Kelly Hu ("CSI: NY"), Lori Loughlin ("Full House")

Traveler
Premise: Two friends go on the run when they become suspects in a terrorist bombing. Who will trust them? How can their clear their names?

So that's it so far. I'm a little depressed about everwood, but truthfully, I didn't think those jackasses at the WC would keep it around. This does not bode well for Veronica Mars because it appears that the WC is trying to be one of those teeny-boppig shows with no substance! BAH!!!

Tomorrow is CBS & then Thurs...Fox & the WC!!
